Can I bring my cat to Rwanda?
Yes — bringing a cat into Rwanda is straightforward as long as the import chain is completed before the flight. Rwanda allows cats to enter without quarantine when the paperwork is done correctly: an import permit, a current rabies vaccination, a microchip and a government-endorsed health certificate. The catch is sequencing — each step has a timing rule, so the work has to start weeks before your cat travels.
This page covers what’s cat-specific. For the full step-by-step process, timing rules and document templates, read our complete guide to importing a pet to Rwanda.
What your cat needs
To clear customs at Kigali, your cat needs all of the following:
- RAB import permit — applied for through MINAGRI / the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board before travel.
- Rabies vaccination — must be at least 30 days old and less than 12 months old at the date of arrival.
- ISO 15-digit microchip — strongly recommended so the rabies record can be tied to your cat.
- International veterinary health certificate— endorsed by the origin country’s government vet authority and issued within 10 days of travel.
- IATA-compliant cat travel crate — correctly sized, ventilated and secured for the journey.
How long it takes
If your cat is already microchipped and vaccinated against rabies, plan for roughly 4–6 weeks to secure the import permit and get the health certificate endorsed. From a cold start — no microchip or rabies vaccine yet — expect 8–10 weeks, because the rabies shot must be at least 30 days old at arrival before the rest of the chain can fall into place.
The order of steps matters more than any single deadline. We work the timeline backward from your travel date so nothing expires or arrives out of sequence — see the full import guide for the detailed schedule.
Arriving at Kigali International Airport (KGL)
All pet imports enter Rwanda through Kigali International Airport (KGL) — there is no other entry point for animals. Vet officials should be notified in advance of the arrival so clearance is ready when the flight lands.
Cats usually travel to Kigali as checked baggage or manifest cargo rather than in the cabin, depending on the airline and route. Once your cat lands, we can handle the airport pickup and door delivery so you don’t have to navigate clearance yourself. See how to reach us in Gishushu after the handover.
What it costs
Total cost depends on origin, airline, crate size and the paperwork involved. Because cats are usually lighter than dogs, they often sit at the lower end of the range. As a broad guide:
- From the EU or UK— roughly USD 1,500–2,800 all-in.
- Within Africa — generally cheaper, with shorter routes and lower freight.
